Political opinion of recent events notwithstanding, and presuming there is truth to the following, what in god's name can be done? How do you stop a nuclear threat that you can't see?

Al-Qaida's No. 2 Claims to Have Nukes

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - Osama bin Laden's terror network claims to have bought ready-made nuclear weapons on the black market in central Asia, the biographer of al-Qaida's No. 2 leader was quoted as telling an Australian television station.

In an interview scheduled to be televised on Monday, Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir said Ayman al-Zawahri claimed that ``smart briefcase bombs'' were available on the black market. It was not clear when the interview between Mir and al-Zawahri took place.

U.S. intelligence agencies have long believed that al-Qaida attempted to acquire a nuclear device on the black market, but say there is no evidence it was successful.

In the interview with Australian Broadcasting Corp. television, parts of which were released Sunday, Mir recalled telling al-Zawahri it was difficult to believe that al-Qaida had nuclear weapons when the terror network didn't have the equipment to maintain or use them.

``Dr Ayman al-Zawahri laughed and he said `Mr. Mir, if you have $30 million, go to the black market in central Asia, contact any disgruntled Soviet scientist, and a lot of ... smart briefcase bombs are available,''' Mir said in the interview.

``They have contacted us, we sent our people to Moscow, to Tashkent, to other central Asian states and they negotiated, and we purchased some suitcase bombs,'' Mir quoted al-Zawahri as saying.

Al-Qaida has never hidden its interest in acquiring nuclear weapons.

The U.S. federal indictment of bin Laden charges that as far back as 1992 he ``and others known and unknown, made efforts to obtain the components of nuclear weapons.''

Bin Laden, in a November 2001 interview with a Pakistani journalist, boasted having hidden such components ``as a deterrent.'' And in 1998, a Russian nuclear weapons design expert was investigated for allegedly working with bin Laden's Taliban allies.

It was revealed last month that Pakistan's top nuclear scientist had sold sensitive equipment and nuclear technology to Iran, Libya and North Korea, fueling fears the information could have also fallen into the hands of terrorists.

Earlier, Mir told Australian media that al-Zawahri also claimed to have visited Australia to recruit militants and collect funds.

``In those days, in early 1996, he was on a mission to organize his network all over the world,'' Mir was quoted as saying. ``He told me he stopped for a while in Darwin (in northern Australia), he was ... looking for help and collecting funds.''

Australia's Attorney-General Philip Ruddock said the government could not rule out the possibility that al-Zawahri visited Australia in the 1990s under a different name.

``Under his own name or any known alias he hasn't traveled to Australia,'' Ruddock told reporters Saturday. ``That doesn't mean to say that he may not have come under some other false documentation, or some other alias that's not known to us.''

Mir describe al-Zawahri as ``the real brain behind Osama bin Laden.''

``He is the real strategist, Osama bin Laden is only a front man,'' Mir was quoted as saying during the interview. ``I think he is more dangerous than bin Laden.''

Al-Zawahri - an Egyptian surgeon - is believed to be hiding in the rugged region around the Pakistan-Afghan border where U.S. and Pakistani troops are conducting a major operation against Taliban and al-Qaida forces.

He is said to have played a leading role in orchestrating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

For starters, the world could unite against these assholes.

I don't believe the have the nukes, though. If they did, they'd be better off not disclosing it.

Them saying that they have them though, will be enough to spook these little uncertain countries, like Spain, Honduras, maybe Germany and the like. It probably could intimidate a few of them into accomodation.

In the end, these terrorist f*cks are doomed. 6 billion people aren't going to be bullied into submission by 50,000 or so religious fruitcakes.

Bush probably thinks this is good news. If Al Qaeda blows up New York, (it's a blue state - Bush doesn't care) then he can suspend the elections and invade Saudi Arabia and control the planet with an iron fist.

I may be jumping on the conservative bandwagon by saying this, but I can't think of too many who aren't interested in fighting terrorism. I think the principle issue is how to successfully do that. It should go without saying that bombing countries who 'might' have something to do with the problem rather than focusing on those who 'do' isn't the answer. It's also safe to say that presuming a country didn't support the attack on Iraq does not mean that we don't have common ground in fighting terrorism. We're not arguing about the 'whats' but about the 'hows.'

I agree. And as soon as we get the "hows" worked out, these terrorist groups are done. They are not as powerful as the media is hyping them up to be.

A 20,000 foot mushroom shaped cloud in any downtown area would be a strong evidence of a successful purchase.

On the other hand...

If theres half the right wing whackos in the military that we've got on this board I wouldn't put it past them to detonate a small device in the US just so they could blame AL-Q and then have an excuse to invade the entire middle east.

Better yet, maybe we should have waited til there was some proof of WMDs or ties to Al-Qaeda before we invaded Iraq and recklessly killed over 500 troops and wounded triple that. Unfortunately for the US and the brave Americans over there (as opposed to the cowardly chickenhawks that sent them) the body count ain't over yet.

But that's okay, if only we spend another 80 billion (which Bush Admin deceitfully kept out of record projected budget deficit) to paraphrase W himself, Iraq will pave the way for peace in the Middle East. LOL

Maybe once that is over, we can go about actually going after Al Qaeda. Right now, we're stretched too thin to either effectively provide security in Afghanistan or Iraq so Bush Admin is doing a half-assed job in both, needlessly stretching military thin and weakening military and the country.

Bottom line:
Iraq's neighbors (who were not threatened) are not safer
World is not safer
U.S. is not safer - in fact more Americans have died at hands of Iraqis in last year than all 10 years preceeding and that's gonna get worse

I will grant you that Iraqi Shiites and Kurds are safer from the Sunnis.

That's just fvckin' great - send American boys to fight religious/ethnic wars of Iraq. Worst foreign policy blunder since Dems sent American boys to Viet Nam to defend corrupt regime against North Viet Nam, which was no threat to our security - no more so than Iraq.

And spare me the drivel about the trillions of dollars and what not - just give me some proof.

REAL BOTTOM LINE IS IGNORING THE PROBLEM WILL NOT MAKE IT GO AWAY. Let's wait till he can kill millions of an invading force.

Proof need I cut and paste pictures of the planes crashing into the buildings?
